In 2010 2 billion people will live
in slums (Colors 57)

slums translate sloppenwijken in Dutch
The Slop - this Slop, version 1 - was made in February 2005. It is constructed out of seemingly worthless materials, but provides the user comfort. It is inspired by the terrible suffering around us: I am rich and you are not.
On it, just besides an IKEA-logo one can read 'bidonville' which is French for slum.

The Slop is meant for a single user, although it can hold more people. It is fitted with a desk, a luxury conference chair, sufficiant lighting, high speed internet (broad band), telephone, fax, a collection of biographies and catalogues on artists and architects (almost everything on Gordon Matta-Clark), and a Stanley knife, cardboard and tape for carrying out small repairs.
On the edge of the roof sit two black crows, guarding The Slop.

The Slop fits in the line of designs by MPD Export of small buildings and sheds, starting as early as 1990. See The House of a Treasure Trove Hunter (Dutch: Het Huisje van een Strandjutter), linked at Slop 4.

This emblem can be found on cultural valuable property (houses, castles). It signals 'don't wreck me in times of war, I am very important cultural heritage'.
